In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and convections of real media products? (i.e. music magazines)

Title – In my magazine research I noticed that all of music magazines have their mastheads at the top of the page; this is so the title of the magazine is at the top of the page and gets noticed by target audience in shops on the shelves. This will hopefully grab their attention and encouraging my target audience to buy the magazine. I have chosen a bold font with a bright red colour; this is so it stands out to my target audience and again will attract them towards the magazine. This red colour also fits in with my house style throughout the magazine as the colour scheme is red, white and black. Also the font I have used which is used throughout my magazine stands out with the help of a drop shadow to my target audience. This drop shadow gives the feeling that the title is coming out at the reader. It defines the title.

Mise-en-scene of images – The mise-en-scene of images was a part of the magazine which I had to put a lot of thought into. Some of the images have just a white background but others have a outside setting. I wanted this magazine to have a mixture of both as both of these settings have different feelings to them. Also the photos I have taken have either been a mid-shot or a close up. The group shots have been all mid-shots as I have to show everybody in the group, but when there is only the one person I could choose either or. The reason I have used the mid-shots and close ups in most of my images is that I want the readers to see the expression on the models faces and maybe recognise who these people are on my magazine. Making sure that my target audience sees who is in the magazine is a must by using the mid-shot photos as this will draw them into the magazine.

Costumes and Props – The use of costumes and props in my magazine was also a main factor that I had to consider while planning the photos. In this I had to make sure that the models where similar styles to my target audience but having their own unique thing as well. I had to find out what the stereotypical person who listens to alternative rock looks like and this turned out to be quite an easy job as I and my friends listen to allot of alternative rock. I based all the clothing from artists I listen too and me and my friends had similar styles of clothing, so I took advatage of this. All the models fit in with the stereotype of a person who listens to alternative rock.

People – All of the people in my magazine are younger looking, this is because alternative rock seems to be more popular within the younger generations. I used these models because of their looks and facial expressions, like their hair. In my double page spread I used the model to look as if he didnt care what people tought of him and he had attitude, as I have him flicking the cigerette at the camera again showing attitude. I think that this and the rest of the images represent the alternative rock genre.

Title font and style – The font of my title is a bold font called Eras Bold ITC. This is a big, bold and dinamic font that really stands out to who ever who looks at the magazine. And with the help of the bright red colouring and drop shadow on the title, it really brings out the font to the target audince. The style of the font is simple yet eye catching; it will be simply recognised and remembered. Also the colour of the title matches the house colours of the whole magazine. The style of this font relates back to the alternative rock genre as it is hard hitting and in your face, it really stands out like some of the artists in this music genre.

Written Content – The written content in my magazine was put into the conventions of a magazine as the start of my double page spread article starts with a bigger letter, the first paragraph is in a bigger font than the rest of the text and it is built around the image which is on that DPS. I have also used grab quotes throughout my magazine to pull in the reader and this is to add a bit more of who the articles about. Also on the double page spread I have included a by-line which tells the reader who created the article. Again with the conventions of the music magazine on the contents page I have written a little bit about the story inside beneath each of the artists or bands to let the reader in on what is inside. I have devided the article into three coloumns so it seperates the text and overall makes the text easier to read. Parts of the text are in different colours, this is so the reader knows which part of the text is the question and which is the answer from the artist. This again divides out the text into parts. The grab quote in the centre on the text again seperates the text into sections and spreds out the text evenly. I think that this improves the look of my double page spread.

Music genre and how your magazine suggests it – The music genre is alternative rock and one of the ways it suggests that it is this genre is because of how the artists and bands look. All of the models look different to what can be found in an metal magazine or a rapping magazine, this is because all of the models are dressed as the artists and bands of this music genre do, e.g skinny jeans and leather jackets. Another way I have suggested that this is a alternative rock magazine is with the name of the magazine its self as it is called “Primal”. This says it is some sort of rock magazine as the word “Primal” sugests attitude and being animal like.

Layout – The layout of my magazine goes with the magazine conventions. All the different parts of the front cover are in their correct places, such as the masthead and the puff. Each part of the front cover has its own place and I think that it goes well the way it is. The layout of the contents page has its own unique layout, instead of having three columns my contents page has only two. One with images and the other with the actual contents of the magazine. The red border also seperates out the two coloumns. I think that the layout of the double page spread is very important as it is created to excite the reader. The title and the image are the most important parts of the double page spread. I think the title is very important because of the size and the colours as this is an uniqe way of attracting the target audience.

Contents page – My contents page is still like my original plans as I thought that it was as good as I could get it, there was no need for improvments. It contains all of the music magazine conventions. I still have the red, white and black colour scheme and the layout of the images a still pretty similar. I chose to have "This week in... PRIMAL" instead of "Contents" as the title, this is a more uniqe and interesting title than just "Contents". Again going with the music magazine conventions on the bottom right hand corner of each of the images I have placed a page number so the readers know where the story is and what this photo is linked to. The use of pictures also goes with the conventions of a music magazine and also suggests the music genre. Although I have not split the page into three coloumns, I think that the use of only two coloumns has just been as effective as the images and the text has been seperated out. The coloumn on the left hand side with the images is the larger column as the reader will see these images from within the magazine.
